Slătioara Secular Forest Reserve

The forest nicknamed the “Wooden Cathedral of Rarău” is part of the UNESCO World Heritage of Humanity. Slătioara Secular Forest was declared a nature reserve in 1941 and this is of particular importance due to the great age of the trees and especially the conifers. Since then, the trees die standing, decompose and provide food for future generations. In Romania, there are no other such resin forests, this being the second in Europe, after Germany. Most of the spruces you meet here are between 300 and 400 years old and can reach a height of 60 meters. 900 species of plants have been identified here, many of them being monuments of nature. Over 450 moss species were discovered here, which is an absolute record for a reserve in Romania. The entire route is marked with a red triangle.
